How to Recruit, Train, And Retain Employees During The Great Resignation

Trying to figure out how to retain employees during the Great Resignation? You’re not alone. In 2021, an average of 3.9 million workers quit their jobs each month through November when a record 4.5 million workers left their jobs, well above the 2019 average of 3.5 million per month.

Twenty percent of workers surveyed said they were quitting their jobs to pursue new career paths and passions, and 25% of hospitality workers said they wouldn’t want to work in the industry again. Many restaurant and retail workers cited low pay and health risks as reasons for leaving their jobs. The healthcare field also faces challenges, as one in five doctors and two in five nurses plan to leave their practices in the next two years.

Why are people quitting?

Many workers surveyed said the pandemic and how their employer treated them were the driving forces behind their decision to quit their jobs. Some companies forced workers to return to the workplace while Covid numbers surged, and workers feared for their safety. The extreme situation surrounding Covid acted as a catalyst for workers to evaluate where they wereand where they wanted to be.

In addition to factors concerning the pandemic, workers cited the following as some of the reasons for quitting their jobs:

  • Lack of professional development opportunities
  • Lack of childcare and maternity leave
  • Burnout
  • Lack of healthcare
  • Lack of retirement benefits
  • Poor wages/salary
  • Starting a personal business

How do you recruit and keep new talent during the Great Resignation?

The key word is “recruit.” Although you are probably accustomed to interviewing people and deciding if they are a good match for your company, a better strategy might be to treat recruits as a benefit your company needs. Workers need to feel appreciated and respected before they will develop loyalty to a company. What can you do to achieve this?

1. Create a welcoming and comfortable environment

This goes beyond peaceful surroundings and allowing for self-care breaks. Easy communication and kindness ensure your potential recruits and employees will want to work with you and contribute to your company.

2. Support fully remote work

It may not be possible in your industry, but offer it if you can. A recent survey found that almost 60% of workers prefer a job that allows them to work from home. Employees have proven they are more productive at home than in a traditional 9–5 office setting, so why wouldn’t you want them to work remotely?

Allowing your employees to work during the hours they feel most productive is more efficient for your company and saves commuting time for your workers. This leads to less burnout and an increase in employee loyalty. This can also be a great solution if your employees are having difficulty with childcare. Additionally, working remotely eases stress during upticks in the pandemic as new variants emerge.

3. Be clear about the path to a promotion opportunity

Let your potential recruits and employees know what it will take to get the promotion they have their eye on. If there is specific training required for it, offer it if you can.

4. Discuss their past work and ask how they want to be challenged

Understanding your potential recruits’ and employees’ past work experience will help you be able to challenge them. Challenges keep people engaged and wanting to work for you.

5. Encourage extracurriculars

Your company is not their whole life. Encouraging your employees to participate in extracurriculars such as side projects or attending conferences will help them augment their work experience and develop their skills.
